The Mediterranean sea, that of Ulysses and Aeneas has long been a difficult limit to cross, a dark road full of pitfalls.
For centuries, Muslim power has dominated the Mediterranean, where the Italian peninsula was the only bulwark of a different culture.
Several factors combined to determine the dimensions of the towers: the need for a certain size of the square and to reach such a height as to be able to visually communicate with the other towers, the resistance to attacks, the conformation of the laying surface of the foundations, the position with respect to at the sea.
The order of the governor of the Principality of Citra, Giovan Maria Costanzo, dated 1563 for the construction of a first section of seven towers with a circular base with twelve square palms.
Of these towers, those of Salerno (Torre Picentina), of Battipaglia (Torre del Tusciano), the two of Capaccio (Torre Sele and Torre Paestum) and the last of Agropoli (Torre San Marco) are still in place today

The Tusciano tower, after the Picentina, is the second located further north among the seven that rise in the stretch from Salerno to Agropoli as decided by the Governor of the Principality Citra, Giovan M; aria de Costanzo, in 1553, and designed by ing. Of the Royal Court, Benvenuto Tortelli, work began in October 1563.
The Tusciano tower is located on the left bank of the Tusciano river, near its outlet to the sea, has a circular plan, tapered upwards and is in an excellent state of conservation, having been reused first as a home and today as a B & B-home Holidays.
The tower is internally divided into two levels, both the two rooms have a diameter of 4.10 meters and are covered with a lowered basin vault.
The first room, on the ground level, now used as a garage, was the cistern and performed the task of collecting rainwater.
To meet today's housing needs, a building has been added to the tower on the eastern side and the first level is accessed from the terrace of this building volume. The second room of the tower was crossed, before the modernization, in the middle by a single ramp, which led from the entrance to the square.
Today only the second part of the ramp remains of this subdivision, a first ramp runs for a quarter of the internal curved wall of the tower until it reaches an intermediate level.
The Tusciano tower had the southern part of the square occupied by the guardhouse, an area of 10x5.35m3, vaulted with a lowered barrel. Currently, others have been added to this room, leaving only the part facing the sea free. The tower tapered upwards, has a throne-like crown of 12, which are more elongated than the other towers. Both inside and outside it was possible to observe that the walls, like the vaults, are formed by blocks of yellow tuff, not available locally but in the Vesuvius and Phlegraean areas.

La serie di torri costiere fatte costruire dai viceré spagnoli di Napoli nel XVI secolo ha suscitato l’interesse degli storici dell’architettura solo a partire dagli anni Sessanta dello scorso secolo.
Un mare Corsaro…….
Il mare mediterraneo, quello di Ulisse e di Enea è stato a lungo un limite difficile da valicare, un’oscura strada piena di insidie.
Per secoli, la potenza mussulmana ha egemonizzato il mediterraneo, dove la penisola italiana, era l’unico baluardo di una cultura diversa.
Diversi fattori concorrevano a determinare le dimensioni delle torri: la necessità di una determinata dimensione della piazza e di raggiungere altezza tali da riuscire a comunicare visivamente con le altre torri, la resistenza agli attacchi, la conformazione del piano di posa delle fondazioni, la posizione rispetto al mare.
L’ordine del governatore del Principato Citra, Giovan Maria Costanzo, del 1563 di edificazione di un primo tratto di sette torri a base circolare con dodici palmi di piazza.

Di queste torri oggi sono ancora in sito quella di Salerno (Torre Picentina), di Battipaglia (Torre del Tusciano), le due di Capaccio (Torre Sele e Torre Paestum) e l’ultima di Agropoli (Torre San Marco)
La torre Tusciano, dopo la Picentina, è la seconda situata più a nord tra le sette che si ergono nel tratto da Salerno ad Agropoli così come deciso dal Governatore del Principato Citra, Giovan Maria de Costanzo, nel 1553, e progettate dall’ing. Della Regia Corte, Benvenuto Tortelli, i lavori iniziarono nell’ottobre del 1563.
La torre del Tusciano si trova sulla sponda sinistra del fiume Tusciano, nei pressi del suo sbocco a mare, ha una pianta circolare, rastremata verso l’alto e si presenta in un ottimo stato di conservazione, essendo stata riutilizzata prima come abitazione e ad oggi come B&B-casa Vacanze.
La torre è suddivisa internamente in due livelli, entrambi i due ambienti hanno un diametro di mt 4.10 e sono coperti con una volta a bacino ribassata.
Il primo ambiente, al livello terra, oggi utilizzato come garage, era la cisterna ed assolveva al compito di raccolta dell’acqua piovana.
Per soddisfare le odierne esigenze abitative alla torre, sul lato orientale, è stato aggiunto un corpo di fabbrica e dal terrazzo di questo volume edilizio si accede al primo livello. Il secondo ambiente della torre era percorso, prima dell’ammodernamento, nel mezzo da un’unica rampa, che dall’ingresso portava alla piazza.
Oggi di questa suddivisione resta solo la seconda parte di rampa, una prima rampa percorre per un quarto la parete curva interna della torre fino a giungere ad un livello intermedio.
La torre del Tusciano aveva la parte meridionale della piazza occupata dalla guardiola, un ambiente di m3.10x5.35, voltato con una botte ribassata. Attualmente a questa camera sono state aggiunte altre, lasciando libera la sola parte rivolta verso il mare. La torre rastremata verso l’alto, ha il coronamento a troniere in numero di 12, che sono più allungate rispetto alle altre torri. Sia all’interno che all’esterno è stato possibile osservare che le pareti come le volte, risultano formate da blocchi di tufo giallo, non reperibile in loco ma nell’area vesuviana e flegrea.

La torre di notevole pregio artistico ed architettonico, ha un notevole valore visto lo sviluppo previsto dal comune di Battipaglia e di Salerno, infatti è posta al ridosso della litoranea e al fianco di numerosi centri balneari, la vocazione futura della zona sarà prettamente turistica.
